A hacienda style hostel is small, cosy, and comfortable, situated along the coast outside the main city walls. It is the perfect mix of community, location, affordability, and enjoyment.
Our hostel accommodation is a pleasant 30-minute walk away from the hustle and bustle of Zadar old town. Stroll along the peninsula to the Lazy Monkey and you will find us only a few minutes’ walk from the main bus station, and to the nearest swimming spots and local waterfront bars.
The Lazy Monkey has a large open plan kitchen as well as unique social spaces including under terrace seating with a pool table and book exchange. Hammocks nestled in the garden and plenty of lounging seats to mingle and make new friends.
Upon arrival, you will be met by well knowledgeable staff and welcoming owners.
Our spacious reception area has an on-site bar, and the dormitory rooms are comfy and airy. Upstairs are fully equipped studios and apartments with private terraces for those that love the hostel vibe but enjoy their peace and quiet.
The Lazy Monkey has been operating in Zadar almost 10 years and remains one of the top-rated hostels not only in Croatia but within the Balkan region and beyond. You can follow our story and find a room that suits your needs.
With arms open, fun and welcoming staff, come and enjoy The Lazy Monkey Hostel, your home away from home.
The ability to hostel through the Balkans was almost non-existent when we began operating in the late 2000’s. Apartments were everywhere, in fact only a few hostel were operating at this time and none in Zadar. For Chris and Kyle bringing the backpacking community back to this region was a great precedent to fulfil a dream of two well-travelled and like-minded friends.
Zadar with its local airport so close to the city, had a unique ability to maximise its tourist potential. Our researched of the area and properties coincided with the start of cheap Ryan Air flights and so the journey began.
Among many trials and tribulations along the way, the Monkey hostels began operating in 2010. The inception of the Drunken/Mellow monkey Hostel in 2011 was an immediate success, and with the inclusion of The Lazy Monkey in 2015, this allowed us to continue to strive for improvements within the traveling community of Zadar.
Although Kyle recently returned to his native Canada, Chris has continued the project along with his wife Tiha, adapting and improving our unique environment within The Lazy Monkey Hostel, allowing the new wave of travellers a place to settle in comfort, remote work when required or just relax and enjoy their home away from home.
The owners, although rare nowadays, are almost always around for a chat or to offer advice. This gives The Lazy Monkey a harmonious atmosphere, with great outdoor social spaces not offered by any other hostel in Zadar.
Our social environment is ingrained in our values and positive reviews. The Lazy décor offers a homely vibe with warm summer colours, alongside a variety of home-grown herbs in pots and handmade furniture, it just feels like home!
The Lazy Monkey is special but so is Zadar. In our opinion, the best city to enjoy the awesome nature and stunning variety of parks in Croatia. Out hostel sits within a two hour radius of four amazing National parks.
We have offered tours and easily accessible routes to all these National parks for over a decade, which allows you all to experience what we have had on our doorstep for so many years.
We feel our experience is uncompromised. With over 30 years of traveling experience around the world, associating, and integrating ourselves within other cultures and societies has been eye opening and beautiful to bring home. We bring some of those experiences to our hostel whether it be our vegetarian dahl curries, or homemade spiced BBQ burgers on food nights, foreign films on movie nights or just chatting to travellers in their native tongue helps everyone feel welcome and relaxed.
The Lazy Monkey offers a variety of languages from our owners and staff including English Croatian, Russian, Ukrainian and Spanish.
We have been rated within the top 3% of hostels on Hostelworld within the Balkan region averaging a review score of 9.6/10 over the past decade.
